Flight to Melbourne and Vibe Savoy Hotel Melbourne

Officially on holiday as we need to get up early - what's that about!!!!

Up at 5am to be at the airport for 6am with plenty of time for our 8.30am flight.   I like to have plenty of time especially as we are travelling for the first time with my LevoC3 power-chair and in a large box a portable shower commode.

We always park at Auckland International Airport Parking and this time when I booked only covered parking was available which was that much more expensive. Parked in Car park D which is a 2 minute walk to the terminal. (Had a map inserted but things keep changing at the airport so may not be up to date - Aug 2016)

Arrived early so had to wait until 6am when our parking time started!   Access is by inserting the credit card you paid with - easy.     Found a park at the end of a row under a light.

Check in was easy as we had Premium Check-in.   No problems with the large box.   Took our two carry-ons with us to the plane.

Our carrier of choice is Air New Zealand and we were booked on a 777-300 and upgraded to Premium Economy.

777-300 Premium Economy.

Wow - great seats!  We are totally converted to this class as it was so much easier for me to lifted in and out of the seat.   Heaps of room, great service and very nice food.

777-300 Premium Economy.

Plus:
The vast selection of activities on the inflight entertainment will keep even the most fidgety of flyers engaged for the whole flight. Enjoy over 1,700 hours of content - including latest movies, TV box sets, video games, and a dedicated kids section - all on a 10.6” personal touch screen in widescreen format. If you need more, there are always the USB and iPod connections to plug in to

Our flight over was fast and we were told there was a window of 15 minutes for our arrival on the new flight time.    Alas that did not work as we arrived early then had to wait on the 'apron' until our gate became available - 1/2 hour.     Due to the wheel chair passengers (me and others) we could not be disembarked on the tarmac which could have been an option.

Only disappointment was how long we had to wait for my power chair to arrive at the plane - think we waited another 1/2 hour.

Finally we were off and able to get through Immigration - airport helper insisted we use the fast track system, but for some reason it would not let me.  Pete went through and I was taken to the front of the queue to be processed.   Off to get the luggage - all relatively easy.

I declared 'nuts' on the Agriculture form as we had taken Whittakers Chocolates with us.  Good move as we were sent to the red line which was completely empty and we got straight through!    Actually the Officer was annoyed with me.....    Tough worked for us!

We had been told there was no need to order a wheelchair accessible taxi, so we found the taxi area and the taxi rep ordered up a maxi taxi.    Didn't have to wait long at all.

Ride to to Vibe Savoy Hotel, on corner of Spencer Street and Little Collins cost around $66.00.  So we were glad it was a Sunday and not a week day.    The recommendation came from:

Hotel Exterior

We had an Easy Access Room - not strictly fully accessible but did work for us.  Huge room although bathroom a little small, but no issue when using the shower commode.

Room overlooked the Atrium - bonus being no road or other noise!

Entry to bathroom

Shower stall - portable shower commode fitted.

Across Spencer Street there is an Outlet Store Centre, Foodcourt and Coles Supermarket.   Got our wine and water for the ship from Coles.    Pete had a neck and shoulder massage at one of the shops in the Outlet Centre.

On arrival in Melbourne it was a hot 35 degrees.   We walked into Coles it was that temperature and when we walked out 20 minutes later the temperature had dropped 10 degrees and was really windy.   By 6pm it was raining sideways.

We stayed in the hotel for drinks and dinner and were joined by our brother-in-laws cousins for dinner.   A jolly night was had by all!

Day One - Queenstown here we come....

We gave ourselves plenty of time to get to the airport by leaving home at 8am,even though it was a public holiday.

We pre-booked a car park in the Business Parking at Domestic Terminal.  Although it is more expensive the park is much closer and under cover.  $64 for 7 days so much cheaper than a taxi each way which would be at least $70.     We managed to get a park on the first floor right by the air-bridge.   We couldn't use a disabled park as we needed to take the mobility card with us - besides it was conned off!!!

Check-in was easy.  The Air NZ staff member was very help and got us sorted quickly even escorting us to the oversize baggage area.  Next stop was for a decent coffee and while I was waiting for Pete to arrive with the coffee I started to wonder where we had put the boarding passes.   It was then we discovered we didn't have boarding passes!   Somehow the lady had not bothered to give us!   So off trotted Pete back down the terminal to get new ones printed.  Apparently the lady who served us was off looking for us!   (we never saw her)

Our flight was allocated Gate 28 which Pete suspected we would not have an air-bridge meaning I would have to be 'craned' on.   Oh joy, at least the weather was fine!       We decided it would be sensible to go thru to Gate 28 and sure enough no air-bridge.      We found a seat for a short while before using the conveniences as the flight was nearly 2 hours so using the on-board facilities was not something I wanted to attempt.

When we emerged the departure lounge was full to bursting as the area was shared by two Gates and the other flight was Jetstar.      We decided the best tactic was to stand by the boarding desk.    When the Air NZ staff member arrived things seemed a bit disorganised and no one had booked the 'forklift'    Didn't take long to sort thank goodness.       Once we had the 'all go' signal we headed out.   I decided it was easier to stand for the very short time involved than sitting of the tiny low transit chair and have to be lifted.   Pete had a week of lifting me ahead of us, so one less is good for both of us.

We had been allocated quite good seats on Airbus 320 – 3A 3B with spare seat so no one would have to be crammed in with us.  Air NZ are very good blocking a seat in a row three when the flight was not completely full.    The Airbus was quite comfortable in the domestic fit out.   We seemed to have so much more room between the seats as there is no entertainment systems in the backs of the seats etc.

During the flight we were given the usual coffee and nibbles but then the flight became bumpy flight, so much so we needed covers on the coffees, then the staff we told to stow their service carts!   Thanks goodness that didn't last too long.

Apart from the bumps the flight went smoothly and once below the clouds the as we approached Queenstown the views were spectacular.  Not that we could really work out where we were!

On arrival we had to do the forklift thing again but this time in a rather windy and chilly 9 degrees!!   Eek.

Julie and Dave were waiting for us.  On the way to collect the baggage we called by Thrifty Cars so Pete could sign up as the second driver, after which Dave handed the keys!    Well Pete did volunteer!!

First stop -checked in at Kingsgate. Our Room is 111 on the ground floor with a courtyard.  The bed is Kingsize. The Bathroom large (read huge) and user friendly.  Overall the room was large.   However the Deck/courtyard not accessible as there was a huge step down and no ramp.  So perfectly useless.

The shower - plenty of room

After dumping our stuff we drove to Arrowtown –  a quaint village sheltered from wind.   It was busy but even at 2pm we managed to find a nice spot for lunch - nothing flash - just a toasted sandwich which was just the ticket.

For there we wandered through the village but we found foot paths very dodgy particularly for the powerchair and lots of shops not accessible or very small.

It turned out the Monday was the final day celebrations of 150 years in Arrowtown.  And at one end, close to where we parked the car, a Mock Court being held outside one the pubs which was packed with locals    We  missed most of it only catching the end.

We drove back via Millbrook and to be totally honest it seemed rather over rated and along way from anything.   And from there we went to Kawarau Hackett Bungy Jump.   It is very accessible with a lift down to shop level - Pete and I did the lift while Julie and Dave walked down to long spiral walkway.    We watched some jumps and it seemed about one every minute - not bad at $180 a jump.  Park of the place under construction so I viewed from inside while the others went out.   I could only assume the accessible view point was the part under construction.  It was quite busy and highly commercial - photos, Dvds etc of each jump was more dollars.

Time to head back to the hotel via a drive around town centre.   We had been on the go so we called 'time out' at the Hotel.     The Hotel while accessible it is not really wheelchair friendly.    When parking in car park (on level 1.5) you have to take the lift to the 4th floor go across to the floor to the other lift bank and down to get to level 1 for Reception and our room!    To get to the restaurant from our room take lift to 4 go across and take lift to 2!!

Like when we are cruising we had 5.30pm drinks, this time in Julie & Dave's room – great view from 4th level.    The weather was not great so we did not venture onto the deck, mind you it wasn't accessible anyway!

We decided to have dinner out so drove to town as it is too far to walk as it was too cold.  6 degrees.    Parking is metered and charged up to 6pm then free, so that is a bonus.  Found a park on the lake front and the views were spectacular.     We found a lot of restaurants closed as it was public holiday.    We decided on dining at the Waterfront Bar & restaurant which is part of one of the Casinos.   As ‘walk-ins’ we had no trouble getting table.  It was busy place but we noticed most were walk-ins.  We were impressed with food.  We ordered the pizza with type of humus for starters – very yummy.     For mains, Julie & Pete had the Guinness Pie, Dave the Beef Thai Salad, I had the Risotto – beautiful bit I should have had the entree size.

At 8.45 it was just getting to get dark and we were pooped so headed back for an early night!

Departing Auckland for Sydney

Finally departure day has arrived.

We took a Corporate Cab to airport at 10 am, nice easy ride to airport being the last Friday of the work year!    Only took about 20 minutes.   With so much luggage - two cases had to go on the back seat.   This time we are travelling heavy as we have two small bags of Kate’s to take, one of which is inside a larger bag of ours, so we have 2 large and 2 heavy carry-on to check in!     Not to mention the wheelchair and the walker!

It was a good idea to upgrade to Works Deluxe for the flight over - Air NZ 119 1pm to Sydney.   The upgrade meant in addition to full service on the flight, we had premium check-in, 2 bags each of 23kgs (ours ended up being 2 @ 22kgs, 1 @ 14kgs 1 @ 10.5kgs)  lounge access (free food coffee and drinks with peace a quiet).   Once on board we got given noise cancelling headphones, and mineral water.

It was a very full flight and we were seated at the front of Economy in the middle, with one unoccupied between us.    As usual we were taken on board first.   The cabin was incredibly cold and I grabbed a blanked straight away as I did not have a cardigan with me.    We were about 3/4hrs into the flight before the Chief Purser announced over the PA apologising for the cold temperature and they had adjusted the temperature up!

Lunch was served during the flight, we both had the beef casserole with garlic potatoes which was very nice - beef was tender.    Dessert was Kapiti Ice Cream - Doris Plum.     Ice cream seems to be standard on most flights these days.      A while after lunch service and clearing of the plates we were given cheese crackers and grapes, which was a nice touch.     The noise cancelling headphones were great and made a huge difference, especially with a full flight and lots of young children on board.   I watched “Jane Eyre” movie.

On arrival at Sydney there was a wheelchair waiting (last year the chairs had all disappeared) and we were assigned a staff member.   It was at this point while waiting to be processed we were told that Christchurch had again been hit by two large quakes registering 5.8 and 6 strength around 2pm NZ time!!!  We could not believe what we were hearing - Not again.

We were taken through the express lane, and down to Baggage Claim.    The staff member took me to the disabled area by the carousel (something I didn’t realise existed!) while Pete went to the Oversized Baggage Claim.    The bags were really slow coming through - ours were one of the first to come through as they were priority, but even so it was a real wait.   Then we headed over to the Oversized Baggage Claim to wait, and wait - then Pete had to go with another staff member all the way down the other end of the arrivals hall to go and look for the power chair.  They were gone ages, and by the time they returned the Baggage Claim area was empty as was Customs, and when we got into the Arrivals Hall there was a couple of small family groups, but otherwise deserted!!!

We had booked a Cab via Corporate Cabs in Auckland so were looked around for a driver with sign board.  We eventually spotted him, and he was ringing The Menzies to see if we had checked in!!      It took us 55 minutes from arrival to out to the Arrivals Hall.  Our driver was a bit concerned at the amount of luggage, but with some planning by Pete we managed to get it all into the car which was a Ford Fairmont, somewhat smaller than the Corporate Cabs Fairlane.   So Pete had two small bags, the seat of the chair and the walker with him in the back seat!!!     We had what is called a Hire Car - all plates on the cars have HC prefixes, and are basically ‘signs down’ cabs.    As the cost was on account and charged back to NZ we actually had no idea what the price was!   Still worth it as you know what you are getting and not some random taxi driver who could take you anywhere.

We have been extremely disappointed with the service at The Menzies from arrival.   There was no Concierge in sight, so the Receptionist, as slight little girl had to carry two heavy bags up the steps - appalling.    At least there was someone to help.

As we were checking in we were ‘ambushed’ by our Diamond Princess friends Kim and Rich Dart, who had come down from Katoomba to spend the night and go out to dinner with us!   It was great to see them.   They had just had a nap and decided to have a coffee on the Lobby while we checked into our room and got sorted.   Not that it too long to do, and when we joined them they were still waiting for their coffees - they eventually arrived 15 minutes later!!!   Extremely slow service.   Pete got a beer and a tomato juice for me, which thankfully not such a mission.

There was not much more news on the earthquakes, except only one injury had been reported but there was severe liquefaction again in the Eastern Suburbs.

We spent a couple of hours chatting in the Lobby, in which time we were joined by Kate, my niece who had just moved to Sydney and her new job was close by.   Kate looked great and seems to be enjoying working in Sydney so far. Kate left about 7pm with her bags and we headed off to see of we could find somewhere for dinner.  In the end we decided to eat at The Menzies.  The menu was very average, the service the slowest in creation.    We waited probably 20 minutes before the waiter came to take our order, and strangely he was more interested in taking our food order than drinks!!!!    We went for the $45 Two course meal.   The service was bizarre for a supposedly top restaurant.   One waiter but a myriad of staff bringing out the meals and clearing the tables.    And the staff delivering the meals had no idea who ordered what - so slack.   For the price we paid, I would expect a better system of delivery of the food, Hospitality 101.

Kim actually teaches Hospitality at High School, and she was not impressed.   Kim and Rich had the 3 course menu, and the time between courses was excessive.    I think Pete and I waited an hour before we saw our mains!!!

However we can say we had great company and we really enjoyed catching up with Kim and Rich.    They are cruising on the Diamond out of Auckland on the 29th December, so our ships will literally pass in the night.

So sorry but we do not recommend The Menzies for anything other than a bed!!!!

Escape to Noosa

Friday 7th October 2011

A 5am rise for today’s flight as it takes me a while to get through the bathroom and get dressed.   The aim was to leave the house by 6am.    We have done enough 3am starts to get the early bird flights, and it is just too hard.  We always found with those flights sleep was not great as you tend to worry about sleeping through the alarm!

This morning there was no chance of that happening as dear Abbie (our old deaf cat) knew exactly what was going on and woke us at 4.30 am demanding a finally ‘love’ and cuddle before we got up!  We know Kate will ensure Abbie will get lots of attention while we are away.  Including the compulsory brushing which Abbie demands.

Packing
We are not the most organized packers, as we don’t do lists - we should really as I am always paranoid we will leave something behind.  Although I have decided as long as we have all our medications, mobile phone charger, and power chair charger, we can buy anything we leave behind within reason.

We had purchased an Eagle Creek ‘Packing Folders’ http://www.eaglecreek.com/ from Bivouac at Sylvia Park.  Interestingly the New Zealand price was cheaper then the American website on the current exchange rate.   We purchased an 18” folder and a pack with a 15” folder, a cube and small toilet bag.

Interesting the two folders took all our shirts and Pete’s good trousers, and the cube we fitted in all our socks (I wear socks daily due to having KAFO’s which means always wearing shoes) and underwear for 9 days.   Our large suitcase looked empty! (We travel with just one large case between the two of us because we take the power chair and walker so a second case would be a pain)  Even with the toilet bags, boots and all our electrical cords etc for the power chair, camera and laptop we had spare room!  As we were concerned about the weight we decided to take our carry on bag, which we would check in.  So, on the plane all we had was a satchel with the Netbook, camera and our Camelbak drink bottles.   The ‘folders’ were a great investment as the clothes don’t move around and stopped them creasing badly.

Auckland International Airport

We got away on time, and had a quick trip to the airport.    We had booked the car into the Auckland Airport long term uncovered parking at the International Terminal http://www.aucklandairport.co.nz/ and the price was very reasonable $70 for ten days.   Easier and more convenient than one of the private off site parking companies, and the price of a one way taxi ride to the airport from home.   Access to the park is via your credit card that you used to pay online with, you park the car, and take your keys with you, which means no-one is driving your car while you are away.    We managed to get a park close to the trolley park and close to the walkway to the terminal.   At least the car will be easy to fine when we get back as it is parked under a light stand!

Checking in was easy.  As we require ‘assistance’ we cannot use the Air NZ ‘self check-in’ pods, but that’s fine.   The large case weighed in at 21.5kgs, so we would have been slightly over of we hadn’t used the carry-on case.

Plenty of time to have breakfast before we head through to the departure lounges.  Once again there have been changes to the terminal, and for the better.   The cafĂ© we have usually ended up having a coffee at now offers full meals, so we were able to have a nice cooked breakfast rather than having something like McDonalds.  A big improvement on the food and the atmosphere.

Going through the Departure point was easy being ushered to the express lane.  Duty free shopping was confusing as usual.   Why do they make the shops, stands etc so hard to negotiate!   Of course it is a marketing ploy….

Off to Gate 8.… On the way were stopped at one of the water stations and filled one of the Camelbak bottles.

I was surprised we were not the first to the gate as we thought we were early.   It seemed no time before we were boarded.  Of course we were the first.

Flight Air NZ 135 to Brisbane departing 9.30 am arriving 10.10am

We were allocated Row 47 seats B and C with the window seat blocked - that sounded fine, but it sounded a long way back.  What I had forgotten was we were on a 777-200, and our seats were in the last row the first cabin.  Down side - we heard every toilet flush!

Our seat allocation was fine, and for once I had the window seat so Pete could get in and out easily, and we didn’t have to worry about a third person.  Boarding went very smoothly, even with a nearly full flight we pushed back 15 minutes ahead of time.  That doesn’t happen often!!!

TIP - Don’t open and pull the cover off the Camelbak once the air - use it in the correct manner and suck the water.  I opened and pulled the top off and gave poor Pete a shower!!!!   Very dumb of me, not being a sports person I had no idea how to use a Camelbak correctly - I do now!!!.    I was staggered how much water came flowing out….   We did have a good laugh.

We had booked ‘The Work’s tickets - seat, 23 kg luggage, meal and entertainment.  The savings to fly seat and carry on only or seat and 23 kg luggage, to me seems pointless, we are on holiday.   The meal served was lunch which was weird, we were expecting breakfast.  The meals were nice; I had the beef casserole and Pete the Cajun chicken.  Coffee was as usual awful and luke warm. But there was Hokey Pokey Ice Cream!    There was wine etc but they hardly bothered to offer that but I guess it was because it was a full flight.  I have to say the personal entertainment screen offer so much to choose from I struggled to find something to watch.   I ended up watching a couple of episodes of ‘Big Fat Gypsy Weddings’ and ‘What is really in our food’, then listened to music (the selection was endless) while  reading the in-flight magazine.

The flight went really quickly and with the help of tail winds we were another 15 minutes ahead of schedule.   In the end we landed 25 minutes early, but that advantage was washed away when we got to Customs and there was a huge queue due to a Singapore Airline flight just in front of us.   It is the first time we had had to wait in a queue in the express line behind crew etc.   Bonus was the airport staff assigned to us stayed around as they did not have another assignment to go on to   In baggage claim one stayed with me and retrieved the bags while Pete and another went off to locate the power chair and walker.  From there we saw one MAF person and walked out.

In the Arrivals Hall I turned the mobile on and called Brisbane Bargain Car Rental http://www.bargaincars.com.au/  used the 1300 number - naughty but it was on the confirmation.  Easy instructions go out to the bus park and wait on Lane 3.   We only had to wait about 5 minutes as the van was at the Domestic Terminal.   Nice old chap duly arrived in a sign written van which was easy to spot.    A short drive to the depot with another family on board to sign up and collect the car.   We had booked a Camry wagon but we should have gone for a Ford wagon, but as all their cars were fully booked there was no chance of upgrading.  We were impressed with the owner who was friendly and efficient.  We had not used this company before I was not sure what to expect, particularly as the price was very reasonable.  $350 for 9 days, half what the mainstream rental companies wanted.  The car has done over 120,000 km’s but it is a Toyota and it’s hard to kill them!  Petrol is $1.48 per litre which is an all time high.   At home petrol is way over $2.00.

By 11.15am we were heading north to Noosa.  We decided to stop at the first roadside service centre to get water and a snack.    As with the last Aussie trip Pete spotted a car of interest at the pumps!   This time a beautiful Mk1 Escort 2 door in red.  Of course he had to go and have a look and then a chat to the very proud owner.

The trip to Noosa was uneventful and quick 1.5 hours to the unit.  Having been there three times before we had a pretty good knowledge of the route, but still used the map book to ‘check’.

Holiday 17 December 2010 - 3 January 2011

Departure Day - Friday 17th December 2010
We departed Auckland on Flight NZ101 Air New Zealand Friday 17th December 2010, 7am.  We choose this flight for two reasons, it’s not an Airbus which I hate, and it means you arrive in Sydney at a reasonable time, so you actually get a full day.  Downside is you loose half a nights sleep before you leave!  Having to get up at 3.15am is not fun.

With the new Air NZ check-in system we were sorted really quickly.   Having the wheelchair and walker was no issue, but did mean we couldn’t go to the self check-in booths – no biggie really.  It is so nice to know you can take all the extra ‘baggage’ without penalty.  Our checked bags weighed in at 39.4kgs, just under the limit.   We usually travel quite lightly, but the bags were carefully packed with wine for my Uncle and Aunt.

We were upstairs in the food hall having a nice coffee and muffin by 5am – plenty of time to amble our way through Customs etc – we just don’t like rushing, after all this is holiday time.

Our early morning flight was not full thankfully, 174 passengers, capacity 234.  Our embarkation started a little late, but the airport staff are always so calm and polite in such events.  One man – who we ended up referring to as Mr Pink Shirt, made himself very unpopular by getting hot under the collar as we had not started boarding by 6.30am, and he had a connecting flight.  Why people have to make such a scene is beyond me.   We chatted to the staff member, as we were in the priority area, and she was quite ‘non plus’ about it all, and commented should Mr Pink Shirt become obnoxious she would ensure he missed his connection!

There were a lot of young children, however only one in our forward cabin, which was interestingly only about 20% full, which suited us fine.     The flight got off to a bad start when the plane pushed out from the air bridge by the tug as we lost virtually all power right in the middle of the flight safety demonstration, necessitating the whole system to be rebooted and the crew having to resort to doing the demonstrations the old way – in the aisle    It took a while before the entertainment system to come back up.   (Mr Pink Shirt would have been even more agitated, but as he was in a rear cabin we didn’t have to put up with him!)

Breakfast was scrambled eggs, which was nice however the coffee was cool, probably due to the electrical failure.  Such is life.

I settled into watching “Eat, Pray, Love” with Julia Roberts and being over 2hrs long meant I was sorted for entertainment for most of the trip.  Pete spent most of his entertainment flicking through an assortment of programmes, but about an hour out of Sydney his screen froze on “Nanny McPhee” with the ‘return’ arrow in the middle of the screen.   No point stressing about that!

On arrival at Sydney, we waited as usual for the rest of the passengers to disembark. Mr Pink Shirt made a rush to be one of the first off, of course!   This that does not worry us, as the rush and crowd are all but gone by the time we get to Immigration.    Besides we were entertained by the passengers behind us and the helpful crew fruitlessly looking for a lost earring!

Once all the passengers were clear, it crew discovered the two wheelchairs that were at the gate had been ‘stolen’ by another airline!    So after some communications and negotiations, we had to walk to the end of the air bridge (not too far thankfully) to a waiting people mover.   Of we went to Immigration to find the place deserted, and no wheelchairs, and you cannot go through Immigration in the people mover.  More negotiations, and another staff member kindly albeit reluctantly gave us a chair.

By the time we got to the baggage carousels our flight number was no longer showing any where so we had a wander and found our bags going around a carousel all on there own.  Once the bags were retrieved we set off to the Fragile Luggage area to collect the powerchair and walker.   The walker was fine, but the chair had been badly handled with the joystick rubber cover missing and the lock for the battery all out of shape!   What a pain.  No point stressing, and of course trying to ‘find’ the joystick cover would have been a total waste of time, so we didn’t even bother trying to find a staff member.

All organised we headed for Biosecurity – again this area was deserted with only staff in attendance, and I am sure we were a nuisance, stopping them for their morning gossip session. Our bags were passed through the scanner and they promptly returned to gossiping without so much as a thank you or any assistance.

Outside in Arrivals Hall was jammed pack – that’s were all the passengers were!!!   Then to get to the Car Rentals, we ending up having to fight our way though a large Asian Tour Group was not easy with the amount luggage of luggage we had.  A bit of pushing and with the odd loud “Excuse Me” we got there.   Again, no queue as such at Budget Rentals, just one person in front of us.    Signing up and getting sorted for the car was a breeze and we were most relieved to be told that the day before all Budget Cars had gone live with the auto charging of Toll Road Charges directly onto your credit card by the Road Toll Agency.  One less hassle, as we wanted to use the Toll Roads to get in and out of Sydney.

So we were off to Canberra, by 10.30am.  A little later than we hoped but still reasonable.

The trip to Canberra is so easy with the M5 motorway.  A couple of turns out of the airport and no lights etc until you get to Canberra 3 hrs or so later.    We stopped at Pleasants Nest for an early lunch break as it was some time since we had been fed and watered.   Driving in we spotted this amazing 1926 Rolls Royce Hearse at the fuel pump.   First photo shot of the holiday!  Not something one would expect to see, and there seemed to be a stream of people doing likewise.

1926 Rolls Royce Hearse

The trip down was pretty uneventful, but not so for those heading to Sydney.  We saw a car on fire on the Northbound lanes, and the traffic that was building up behind was staggering.  Glad it wasn’t us.   The car was still alight when we passed by the Fire Department had it under control.  Bit scary that a car can go up just like that as there was no evidence of an accident etc.

Three days in Canberra with family

Our arrival in Canberra was spot on, according to Uncle Bill when we arrived.   He had calculated we would arrive at 2pm.    Making the most of opportunities to spend time my late mother’s siblings is most important.

Disappointingly the weather in Canberra was more like an Auckland winter than a summer, in fact the mountains south had a dusting of snow which meant the temperatures were a tad cold.  Hence we didn’t venture too far, which was fine.

The only ‘must do’ task was to locate a dealership selling mobility scooters as the ‘joystick’ from my trusty Puzzle chair had been lost during transit.  Here my cousin stepped up to the mark as a chap who lives in his cul-de-sac (and sponsors Rob in the Transplant Games) was just the dealer we needed.   After some jovial exchanges about allowing Kiwi’s into the area and about not being able to pick your family he handed over the required part at no charge – what a nice chap.

On our last day, we enjoyed a rather long family Christmas BBQ lunch that started early and finished late, with all the Canberra Bensons in attendance.

Return to Sydney

Our return drive to Sydney was unremarkable, and we managed to somehow navigate the Eastern Corridor Toll Road and arrive at The Menzies Hotel (opposite Wynyard Station) without much to do.

I wish we could say the same about returning the car from the hotel to Budget Rentals!   For starters the maps provided by Budget and the hotel did not bother to mention the masses of One-way, No Right Turn, and No Left Turns in the CDB.   So my big tip is – DON’T DO IT!   We were about ½ hr into our short journey when we realised we needed petrol, so we pulled over to the side to ‘take 5’ and assess where we were and where should be!   Low and behold at the next intersection was a petrol station.  That solved we spent another ½ hr getting to Budget.  Then we encountered a very obnoxious Asian Garage Attendant who said the damage on the car would have to be paid for, despite our insistence it was there when we picked it up.  He insisted it was not marked so it was out fault.  I told him that ‘we would see about that’   So off to the Office and another ½ hr with a very patient staff member who managed to confirm our story and that indeed the damage was ‘old’.   Second Tip – Take photos of rental cars, regardless of what anyone says or writes!!

The walk back to The Menzies took us half the time of the drive!   Glad Pete didn’t go on his own, he would have still being trying to find his way out – a navigator was necessary.
